For each fare-paying customer, AirTran Airways allows two (2) checked pieces free of charge, with size limitations. The maximum weight is 50 pounds and maximum size is 62 inches (length + width + height). The excess baggage charge, for other than sporting equipment, will be $50.00 for each piece over the free allowance.
Overweight baggage will be accepted at the following rates per bag: $25 from 51 to 70 pounds and $65 from 71 to 100 pounds. Oversize baggage will be accepted up to a maximum size of 80 inches for a fee of $50 per bag. Baggage weighing over 100 pounds will not be accepted.

Oceansource note: We’re not sure on this airline’s policy here, but we’ve contacted them to clarify and will update as soon as they get back to us…[We've got an answer and they don't seem to know what windsurf or kitesurf boards are, so you may get away with calling it a surfboard, or you might get charged the full excess baggage rate, we're pushing for a final answer, but they're being strangely stubborn!]

Surfing equipment - One (1) boogie board will be accepted when packed in a case designed to prevent damage to boogie boards. The boogie board will be accepted only upon completion of a Limited Release Tag. Sporting equipment NOT included in the free baggage allowance are: bicycles, scuba gear and surfboards. Each item has acceptance limitations (see below) and will be assessed an excess baggage charge of $65. Surfboards will be accepted when packed in a case designed to prevent damage to surfboards, and only upon completion of a Limited Release Tag.
