,strong>Note recent rule changes: from 7th November 2007) BA won't take 'large sporting equipment' which totally scuppers our windsurfing and surfing cousins. However it doesn't include golf clubs, of which one bag may be taken free of charge, so there's an obvious scam for kiters! If you don't fancy scamming the situation isn't clear on whether BA will actually allow kitesurf equipment through. Surf style boards are probably banned and we'd suggest using another airline if you can. Up until 7th November 2007 the following still applies:

You may check in your free checked baggage plus one additional item of sporting equipment providing that it weighs no more than 32kg and does not exceed the dimensions: 2.5m x 1.00m x 0.8m (98 x 39 x 31"). Kite kit is included in this as long as they're less than 2.5m. Note that your total luggage must therefore be below 32kg - Excess charges apply if you do go over this rate which becomes confusing now that BA has 'simplified' its excess baggage rules, and you now pay an excess per bag rather than per weight!

Excess baggage rates are: Longhaul: £120 per bag or £84 per bag if paid online (includes 30% discount), Shorthaul: £60 per bag or £42 per bag if paid online (includes 30% discount), UK Domestic: £30 per bag or £21 per bag if paid online (includes 30% discount). Note these are each way.

You can and should book kit on in advance since you then qualify for a 30% discount on any excess fees you will have to pay.

If you have flown with, or know a good tip specific to this airline, please let everyone know by rating it and leaving a report here. Some airlines don't apply (or even know) their own kit policies so it's useful to see other people's experiences flying with them …

The Windsurfer's least favourite airline...

This used to read that "BA is now quite a good carrier - as long as you can keep the wieght down, following a recent change in their policy..." - but they've now gone and changed it again. From the 7th November 2007 they will refuse to take any large sporting equipment including windsurf boards and there doesn't seem to be anything you can do to sneak them on. Until the 7th of November 2007 the following still applies though, after that avoid BA like the plague:

You may check in your free checked baggage plus one additional item of sporting equipment providing that it weighs no more than 32kg and does not exceed the dimensions: 2.5m x 1.00m x 0.8m (98 x 39 x 31"). Windsurf and surfboards are included in this as long as they're less than 2.5m.Mast, boom and sail also included if wrapped as one item. Note that your total luggage must therefore be below 32kg - and a windsurf board plus three sails, boom, mast etc... will often be above this on its own.

Excess charges apply if you do go over this rate which becomes confusing now that BA has 'simplified' its excess baggage rules, and you now pay an excess per bag rather than per weight. Excess baggage rates are: Longhaul: £120 per bag or £84 per bag if paid online (includes 30% discount), Shorthaul: £60 per bag or £42 per bag if paid online (includes 30% discount), UK Domestic: £30 per bag or £21 per bag if paid online (includes 30% discount). These are each way rates by the way.

You can and should book kit on in advance since you then qualify for a 30% discount on any excess fees you will have to pay.
