Oceansource note: We’re not sure on this airline’s policy here, but we’ve contacted them to clarify - and are still confused! As we understand it the policy for surfboards applies to kitesurf gear.

If you have flown with, or know a good tip specific to this airline, please
let everyone know by rating it and leaving a report here. Some airlines
don't apply (or even know) their own kit policies so it's useful to see
other people's experiences flying with them …

Delta Airlines will accept surfboards even when they're over 80" in total dimension (length + height + width); however, an excess baggage charge will apply to any board 62" or more. [This fee works out at $100]
Additional surfboard restrictions and exceptions:
If not in a protective case, you must fill out a limited liability release before we accept it.
Between Honolulu and Maui, there is a $20 charge each way.

Be very careful --
Delta has recently changed it's fees DRASTICALLY;

300$ per board bag each way.

Shocking fees. I have been a Northwest Elite Frequent Flyer for about 15 years. Last year I flew NWA from MSP to London and paid $85 to bring my board 1 way. Now that Delta has swallowed NWA, I may have to reconsider where I book my flights. I can redirect probably 50% or more of my annual air travel and will.
