Flying from Europe to Australia, surfboards are taken free of charge (eat that BA) as long their combined weight is within MH's allowance, and shorter than 109'' (as of june 2008).
If u'r flying economy I'll guess you have to limit your number of boards to 2 unless you just wanna bring your undies.
Be careful though, MH's overweight charges are pretty hefty......
