Domestic Travel (within the U.S./Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean)
Coach Class: Each ticketed passenger is allowed two (2) pieces of checked luggage.
Each piece: 50 pounds (23 kg) with linear dimensions not to exceed 62 inches (158 cm).
First Class: Each ticketed passenger is allowed three (3) checked pieces.
First two (2) pieces: 70 pounds (32 kg) with linear dimensions not to exceed 62 inches (158 cm) per piece.
Third piece: 40 pounds (18 kg) with linear dimensions not to exceed 45 inches (115 cm).
International Travel - between North America and Africa / Asia / Europe / India / Middle East)
Coach Class: Each ticketed passenger is allowed two (2) pieces of checked luggage.
Each piece: 50 pounds (23 kg) with linear dimensions not to exceed 62 inches (158 cm).
Exceptions for trans-Pacific travel wholly between U.S./Canada and the Philippines , China and Hong Kong , checked pieces may weigh up to 70 pounds (32 kg) each.
Checked luggage within the free 2 bag allowance that weigh more than 50 pounds and up to 70 pounds will be assessed a $50.00 heavy bag fee.
Hand Luggage:
Northwest allows you to carry one piece of luggage on board the aircraft plus a purse or briefcase or laptop computer or small backpack. The carry-on luggage must be of a size and shape to allow for storage in overhead compartments or underneath the seat in front of you.
Dimensions:
Cannot exceed 45 linear inches (9 inches by 14 inches by 22 inches) (Oceansource note: there's no weight limit for hand luggage which is unusual.)

"Northwest accepts surfing equipment as checked luggage only. Surfing equipment is not included in a customer's free luggage allowance and is subject to a charge of $80.00 USD (each way) per item. Surf equipment may not be accepted on certain types of aircraft at Northwest's discretion.
One (1) piece of surfing equipment is defined as one of the following:
One (1) surf board with a length no longer than 109 inches (277 cm)
One (1) windsurf board with mast, boom, and sail.
Northwest does not allow surf equipment in free luggage allowance. All surfing equipment will be charged a rate of one (1) excess bag charge.

Trans-Atlantic travel fee: $150.00 USD / CAD / EUR
