We're contacting SAA to get their official policy, but in the meantime we know they charge 200 dollars per windsurf board on a flight from London to Cape Town, and 850Rand on the way back. The charge for a surfboard is half those rates. 'One windsurfer' can be in more than one bag to a total of 50Kgs. We'll update when we can.

If you have flown with, or know a good tip specific to this airline, please let everyone know by rating it and leaving a report here. Some airlines don't apply (or even know) their own kit policies so it's useful to see other people's experiences flying with them …

Latest update is not good news. Apparently SAA now require all windsurfing kit to go as freight: see this from their official baggage policy (which was sent as a pdf document to a traveller recently):

"Canoes / Windsurfer and Handglider
To be accepted strictly as cargo."

So that's a pretty emphatic DON'T USE SAA TO FLY TO SOUTH AFRICA ANY MORE!!!

OK, WE HAVE AN UPDATE:
"Surfboarding equipment is not included in the free baggage allowance.
Exception : On SA flights only Surfboarding equipment is transported free of charge if within the free
baggage allowance.
Surfboards bigger than 200 cm shall be handled like a windsurfer. Following rates apply:
WC: [WEIGHT CONCEPT] EUR100/USD100/CAD140/ZAR450 for first and additional surfboard each.
PC: [PIECE CONCEPT - CHECK YOUR TICKET TO SEE WHICH APPLIES TO YOU]1 surfboard not exceeding 200cm at 50% of 1 excess baggage charge, additional surfboards at the
applicable excess baggage rate.
FOR SURFBOARDS LONGER THAN 2 METRES PLEASE NOTE THE FOLLOWING APPLIES
Canoes / Windsurfer and Handglider
To be accepted strictly as cargo.

IE YOU HAVE TO FLY IT AS FRIEGHT WHICH IS BAD NEWS I'M AFRAID.
